My daughter wrote a term paper on Shakespeare's Othello, arguing that it was, in many ways, an alchemical text. She provided a decent amount of detail regarding the more esoteric strands of alchemy and the presence of mystical alchemy in some of Shakespeare's other plays. Given the number of academic studies covering similar geography, we thought she was on safe ground with her teachers. She was required to turn in a draft for comments before finalizing her paper. She was surprised when she received a less than enthusiastic evaluation regarding her thesis and efforts. Her teachers (there were two involved) were dumbfounded why she didn't notice and explore the issue of race in the play. When she told them that she believed there were more esoteric elements at play and that race was simply window dressing for an understanding of the unconscious rooted in mystical alchemy, her teachers didn't know what to say. They dinged her for failing to analyze the racial dimension of the conflict in the play. My daughter had wanted to major in English and, perhaps, pursue graduate work. After this experience, she decided academia was a waste of time.

I have decidedly mixed-feelings about this interview. On the one hand, I’m so glad and my heart is happy that Liza is finally getting the attention she deserves! She has worked incredibly hard for this moment! But on the other hand, I also feel a sense of anxiety about Liza becoming more famous and all that will come along with that.

Wonderful interview. Now, do you have a post where we can suggest horrific leftist books for you to read and critique for us?! lol

I graduated from CC in 1987, the very first co-ed graduating class. I think I was the only conservative on campus. Notwithstanding, professors and students mainly complained about Reagan and South Africa. On the rigors of academics, I lost points in Lit Hum because I missed class when my mom died. It was a totally different world back then.

I guess we were classmates. History professor James Shenton warned in The Spectator at the time that the US one day might become like South Africa was, which was being protested on campus. Sort of an interesting forecast.
