Your discourse on the ecstasy of reading beautiful sentences is a page from my own heart. And when an aesthetically wondrous sentence also contains a profound idea, encountering it can feel like the greatest moment of your life. No wonder Sasha loves Wilde so much.
One of the elements of my Arthurian legend novel take. Sketching approaches with scenes under 10 frames. Helpful… don’t get it until I see multiple angles and test it with the larger picture of experience across chapters.
I enjoyed your discussion. The best observation, Sasha- most people don’t think they need to learn anything once they’re out of school .
A few observations:
1) One might not be too thrilled by Sartre’s comments on Jews but they aren’t a byproduct of his not knowing Jews . He’d had Raymond Aron( Lisa if you haven’t read him put him on the list)as enemy-friend since ENS days.Subsequently we have Sartre’s adoption of Arlette Elkaim
2- Yes there is religious existentialism- see Gabriel Marcel
3- Spengler had a rather convoluted relationship with the Nazis. He was never especially impressed by Hitler but voted for them in 1932 . He was not especially interested in their racial theories and I don’t think he was an anti Semite or at a minimum he certainly didn’t share the Nazi preoccupation with that. After 1932,he became progressively hostile to them and died in 1936. He came up with a lot good quotes but reading him at length is painful .
4- Disagreements- I don’t see Nietzsche in any major sense coming out of Hegel the differences in what I’d call trajectory are huge. Ok you talk of the master- slave dialectic and see it in the Geneology of Morals. Well I don’t think you can go to far with that.I can’t briefly encapsulate this but the whole scheme is dramatically different. To be very brief Nietzsche is not theistic even in the Hegelian sense( neither is Marx but he preserves the dialectic which Nietzsche does not)nor is he caught up in any kind of progressive teleology.
By the way if you can find the silly but funny video where Schoepenhauer battles Hegel after listening to the Rocky theme , give it a look. It’s funny
5- Heidegger- after the war he basically obfuscated, which I’d have to say came to him naturally. I don’t think he was at all politically engaged and wasn’t running around saying Heil Hitler but did he ever really repudiate his past? Not really.
